are doing about it. have a look. president obama spending christmas eve on the links in honolulu with friends. while lawmakers relax at home for the holidays. right now the senate looks like it might be the only hope for a compromise deal. can a deal be struck? white house correspondent brianna is traveling with the first family in honolulu, hawaii. hey, brianna, good morning. >> good morning, to you, it's been many silent nights actually in washington these days. not because there's nobody there to sort of figure out what's going on with the fiscal cliff but also, because folks really aren't talking. we know the white house is talking to senate democrats as we look to the senate as he reconvene on thursday, really, the last-ditch effort to try to do something. as of yet, congressional democrats in the white house are not talking with congressional republicans. that's even at the staff level. what we're expecting now is that the senate majority leader harry reid will try to get something together to get republican support in both the house and the senate. but what they're looking

out in the world though it is hard to find in washington these days. president obama spending holidays in beautiful hawaii where reports now surfaced where he is looking to strike a smaller fiscal deal that would extend tax cuts for the middle class but not tackling any spending cuts. chief white house correspondent ed henry is live in honolulu with more. ed, for the first time, people like joe lieberman are saying i really think we'll go over the cliff. what do you hear? >> reporter: it's a real possibility, you're right. we're a week out. people on both sides have been talking this thing to death. it might need a christmas miracle at this point to avoid going off the cliff. the president scaled back plan basically would extend unemmoment benefits for two million people who will lose them a week after christmas if there is no deal. he also wants to extend tax cuts for 98% of americans. you heard him talk about that again and again. that level of $250,000 or less. the republicans have not afreed to that on the hill obviously. when you talk to folks like senator lindsey graham, they say

and that is not a concern. president obama is there spending time with his family for the holiday and yesterday he went golfing before heading to the beach with the first lady and their daughters. aides say the president will have to return to washington in a day or two to deal with you know what the fiscal crisis. chief house correspondented spayeed henry is in hawaii with the president. i assume if there were any conversations between the president and the speaker we would be advised. >> they say there have not been any more calls, no contact between the high school and the speaker. that is a sign that there's been no major progress. they say that the lines of communication are still open between the president's staff, the peaker's staff. also now the circle is widening a little bit and it's including senate staff, because given what happened late last week where speaker boehner's so-called plan b fail in the house there is now momentum to try and get something going in the senate right after christmas and maybe possible something there, some sort of a stop-gap measure, hope they can pass it in the h

and cut spending. that is what they're are bound to do. barack obama ran also on that. he said he would restore fiscal responsibility and do something about the spending. this is a guy who was giving us trillion dollar deficits, both sides are being decided, and start talking about this. stuart: what is the media doing? >> typically cobbling barack obama. this guy is filing his nails while the republicans twist themselves into knots. the media are giving obama a complete pass on this one and not holding his feet to the fire on anything and keeping the gun fire on the republicans at all times. the media have been just about as silent as anyone else. all the media accept for stuart varney. stuart: flattery is the fondest milk in television. i have a prediction from you. i personally think there will be some kind of awful last-minute deal, tax the rich, don't cut spending, ignore the debt. i think that will happen. what is your prediction? >> i will put my kids and your prediction. republicans will take another step, go back another five to ten yards on the football field and the problem w

"the journal" reports one proposal being considered would also transfer potentially riskier loans that are held by private investors into fannie and freddie and transferring billions of dollars of mortgages to the government-backed mortgage companies would require congressional authorization and temporarily change the charters of fannie and freddie. does that sound like something -- a kid -- >> i don't know if it's good or not. >> all the stuff that's not covered now. you need -- >> yeah -- >> put it into fannie and freddie again. expand their balance sheets. i don't know. >> you have a view? >> how much was the tie? >> i don't want to say. >> really? >> was this a christmas tie, holiday tie? >> no. getting back to your question -- >> go ahead. >> fannie and freddie. look at that -- >> beautiful tie. >> punting. he

. if you overlay that, you're talking about liquidity, with the higher taxes, obama's last offer that was on the table was $1.4 trillion in higher taxes over ten years, and $800 billion in lower spending. that's taking a lot of liquidity out of the economy. >> okay, barry, last question here. fill in the blanks for me. if we hold x, then this correction will not happen. >> if we hold, i mean, key support level certain little on the s&p 500. look for 1400, would be a key support level to hold there. we'd want to bounce back up. but what you really would be looking for, i showed on the charts, key resistance levels. what you really want to see, we have not been able to break above those resistance levels. you need to break above those resistance levels very convincingly if you're going to convince me there's going to be a rally in 2013. >> barry, thank you, joining us tonight from miami. >> thank you. >> you look what barry has to say? >> i think you should get a correction here. >> do you like the notion of the presidential cycles? >> i look more, you know, so, you're dealing righ

that gets done, we go over the fiscal cliff or the obama cliff and everything that gets kicked into gear, higher tax rates, some of the spending cuts, sequestration, probably good for the economy, which i believe is, but also he can come back in after the first of the year, sometime in january or february and say, let's pass some tax cuts for people making under $250,000 a year, like i've wanted to do all along and he gets to own tax cuts. it's very, very politically senator to do this on his part. on right, they really, really needed to be one voice and they just couldn't get to that. >> kelly: he divided the republicans as charles krauthammer alluded to, saying that's what the president wanted to do, to divide the republicans. senator john barrasso has something to say about the president, saying he may have wanted to do this all along, go off the fiscal cliff. >> i think that he sees a lot of cuts to the military, which the democrats have been after for a long time. and then he gets to do what he loves to do, which is blame republicans. my concern is that i actually see financial pro
